The Young Program

1. So far there are already four (or five) institutions run Occupational Therapy Program in Malaysia. The programs are ranging from one to twenty five years old and they are continued to emerge in many other new institution. Some institutions are happy to run its program to feed the local need, while some are interested to go global.

2. The interesting part about ‘go global’, it will create many opportunities for the graduate to work all over the world and for the institution to gain an extra milestone. Whether it is for the graduate or for the institution, works need to be done. It is not easy to get world recognition. Program need to be established, standard must be adhered, excellent paper need to be submitted.

3. I don’t know how people think? Some people believe in ‘know-who’ enough to get thing done but the other believe in ‘fundamental’. You will see people will allocate budget to travel and meet people but to hire consultant to assist in preparing paper is not a priority or not in the agenda at all. Like it or not there are people who can talk and get thing done or escape from doing. At the end of the day, someone need to shoulder the blame!

4. Some people like to discuss and seek assistance from ‘strangers’ to get work done. I do not know for what reasons. Do the local peers are not competent to do work? Or local people cannot keep their mouth shut when they see something funny.

5. Some people like to do reminiscence to nostalgia the success story in the past to balance the setbacks that they encounter in the present. It helps in some areas but not in many.

Putting The Young Brain Together

What are the critical education issues in the OT training in Malaysia? Include foundational knowledge, OT specific knowledge, and practice skills.

Emailkan kepada saya sebgai tanda persetujuan at hanafiah2u@gmail.com

The Young Community

Due to the complex nature of occupational therapy, we can always argue that we are all engage in OT activities in one way or another. But the real issue in my opinion is not so much whether we are practicing OT or not, but rather how good we are at it.

The same can be said about communities of practice. Communities of practice are everywhere. They are in school and universities, in work and at home, in hospital and so on. Again the issue is not whether we belong to CoP or not, but on whether we are aware of their importance and the benefits they bring to the organisation.

CoP are about people. They normally develop around thing that matter to them. It is the realization of the importance of what they are doing that distinguishes one community from the others. In the case of the BEST CoP,it is a CoP for MOTA. We hope, it will translate into an organisational asset that can help shape the future of the profession as a whole. It belongs to all members. We request for crediantial mainly for organisational purposes. Best CoP is designed with differences. We already have huge portal to discuss openly around most subjects to cater for the current requirements.

Best CoP is going to be knowledge based driven activities. We improve and deepen our knowledge and expertise in OT by interacting on an ongoing basis.CoP is the best way to share knowledge and allowed the better transfer of tacit knowlwdge.
We have many experts within our community. Many types, latent experts, up and coming experts, expert syndrome and many more. What benefit that profession gain by having these people around ? Not very much I reckon if they are all venture individually. If we continue this trend the profession will suffer. We will be passing the struggle from generation to generation. This is what happening now. There is no different of struggle made by previous people compare to what we are facing now. I perceive the struggle will continue and continue till no end. CoP, the return what we invest is not immediate. It creates value for its individual members in many ways.....

I do hope more OTs coming forward to support. Let's do brilliant rock-busting. Start to re program our nervous system, reprogramming the way we think by changing our choice of words. We will get immediate noticeable different result.

Let's do while still have time.

The Young Workplace

Workplace Rehabilitation Seminar 3 & 4 Disember 2005.

You can't afford to miss this seminar out.

The Young Site

Enabling the Young

Dear all,

OT KSKB and MOTA would like to organise a day seminar on Enabling people through technology and environmental design. It will be on the12 July 2005. Speaker is from University Queensland, Australia.

This seminar will examine how occupational therapists have traditionally prescribed devices and modified the environment to accommodate impairments and the consequences of using this type of approach. It will also examine new conceptual frameworks such as the International Classification of Function (ICF) and how these approaches have altered the way in which devices and the environment are considered and how occupational therapists work to improve the lives of people with disabilities. It will also outline the range of technologies that can enable people with disabilities to live satisfying and productive lives.

It will also examine the evolution of design approaches and how these can change the way in which people with disabilities live and function in the community. We still have not decided whether to have it for a small scale seminar or do it for bigger capacity. Your response is highly appreciated.
